About The Position

BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers. This is a Summer 2027 internship opportunity where innovative thinking is fostered and barrier-free teamwork is embraced every day. As a Data Science Intern, you will receive hands-on experience in data analysis, machine learning, and analytical modeling in a collaborative environment. You will engage in meaningful projects that support our mission of delivering exceptional technology solutions.

Requirements

• Must be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
• Must be familiar with Python, as well as experience with data manipulation libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy).
• Must have a basic understanding of machine learning concepts and frameworks (e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow).
• Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
• Must have effective communication skills, both verbal and written to present technical findings clearly.
• Must have a proactive and curious mindset, with a willingness to learn and tackle new challenges.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with VR/AR/XR development.
• Exposure to data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Matplotlib, or ParaView) is a plus.
• Experience with microcontroller or ladder logic programming.
• Sensors, instrumentation, and controls interests.
• Manufacturing interests.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the collection, cleaning, and preprocessing of large datasets to prepare for analysis.
• Collaborate with data scientists and engineers to develop machine learning models and analytical solutions for various projects.
• Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover trends, patterns, and insights that inform business strategies.
• Document methodologies and results, ensuring clarity for future reference and for team members.
• Participate in team meetings to present findings and contribute to problem-solving discussions.
