About The Position

The MISO 2027 Summer Internship Program is seeking graduate-level students in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science/Technology, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or related fields for a career-igniting summer internship. The program offers the opportunity to work on real AI and software engineering projects that impact MISO's mission of keeping the lights on for 45 million people by driving innovations that boost system reliability, resilience, and performance. Interns will tackle complex technical challenges in the energy industry, explore and build new technologies using Python, GitHub, cloud platforms, and modern AI frameworks, and support AI-enabled workflows. The internship also includes community service events, social activities, networking, and development programming, culminating in a final project presentation.

Requirements

  • Pursuing Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science/Technology, Computer Engineering, or Data Science at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Skills in Python, GitHub, GitHub Copilot, generative AI, LLMs, prompt engineering, RAG, agent frameworks, and automation principles.
  • Understand or are excited to learn cloud infrastructure concepts, networking basics, observability, and security fundamentals.
  • Curious, creative, collaborative learners who enjoy experimenting, solving problems, and exploring new technologies.
  • Communicate well, ask thoughtful questions, and thrive in hands‑on technical environments.
  • Available to start Wednesday, June 2nd, 2027 and continue through Friday, August 13th, 2027.
  • No VISA sponsorship opportunities, including OPT/CPT.

Responsibilities

  • Work on real AI and software engineering projects that help MISO explore and build new technologies — from early prototypes to production‑ready tools using Python, GitHub, cloud platforms, and modern AI frameworks.
  • Support AI‑enabled workflows such as data pipelines, automation, LLM/RAG agents, observability dashboards, or pilot features that test new ideas quickly and safely.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, product teams, and emerging‑tech specialists to refine requirements, test concepts, evaluate performance, and improve system reliability.
  • Attend community service events, intern socials, networking activities, and development programming to help you grow your confidence, build relationships, and understand MISO’s broader mission.
  • Wrap up the summer with a final presentation summarizing your project work, recommendations, and areas of impact.
