About The Position

Itron is seeking a curious and motivated 2027 Summer Data Science Intern for its Distributed Intelligence Data Science team. The team helps utilities improve distribution-system visibility by combining grid-edge data with an open enterprise application platform. The intern will work with data scientists, software engineers, and business stakeholders on solutions related to grid optimization, asset management, distributed energy resource integration, and customer engagement. The internship lasts 10 weeks during Summer 2027 and is scheduled for 40 hours per week. The target start date is May or June 2027, with an end date in August or September depending on the academic schedule. The role is associated with Itron’s Liberty Lake, Washington location and is described as a typical office-based position. A hybrid work schedule is listed among the benefits. The successful candidate’s starting wage in Liberty Lake is $15.87–$44.23 per hour. The wage will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience and may vary by location.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s degree program in a related field, such as Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or Software Engineering.
Will have completed at least two years of college coursework by the internship start date.
Experience using AI agent-driven tools to support software development, testing, code review, or related technical activities.
Intermediate proficiency in Python and SQL.
Knowledge of statistical methods, data-analysis techniques, and data-driven problem solving.
Exposure to machine learning through coursework, projects, research, internships, or professional experience.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to share ideas clearly and respectfully.
Ability to collaborate in team environments while maintaining accountability for assigned work.
Interest in developing innovative solutions for customer and business needs in the Utilities & Energy industry.

Nice To Haves

Previous internship, research, or professional experience in data science, analytics, software engineering, or machine learning.
Experience using AI agent-supported tools for interactive data analysis and technical problem solving.
Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.
Experience with version control systems such as GitHub.
Enrollment in a master’s degree program in a STEM-related discipline, including Statistics, Data Science, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a similar field.
Experience with collaborative technical projects involving cross-functional teams.
Interest in electric utility operations, grid modernization, distributed energy resources, or related energy technologies.

Responsibilities

Support the development, maintenance, and enhancement of production data and machine-learning pipelines.
Assist with implementing and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure, with accountability and attention to quality.
Clean, prepare, and validate datasets ranging from tens to hundreds of gigabytes for analysis, model development, and operational use.
Work with senior team members and subject matter experts on exploratory data analysis and communicate insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
Contribute to research, testing, and improvement of machine-learning models under the guidance of experienced data scientists.
Collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver customer-focused solutions.
Adapt to evolving priorities, incorporate feedback, and continuously improve work outputs.
Practice inclusive collaboration that values diverse perspectives and ideas.
Support projects that help utilities improve operational efficiency, reliability, and customer outcomes.
