About The Position

MITRE’s Data Science and Engineering department seeks an intern to apply data science, data engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and applied research skills to problems of national importance. MITRE’s work spans domains including national security, intelligence, transportation, and healthcare. Interns may also have opportunities to participate in MITRE’s internal research and development program, which funds innovative applied research addressing sponsors’ challenging problems. The role combines data science and data engineering, drawing on computer science, mathematics, and software engineering foundations to work with data systems and apply machine learning and AI. The intern should be able to contribute across the data lifecycle, from data modeling and processing through statistical analysis, machine learning, and experimentation. Experience in every listed area is not required; some experience in several areas is expected. The position is onsite. Candidates must be full-time students in an accredited degree-seeking program and remain enrolled full-time during the semester following the internship. Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Top Secret U.S. Government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility.

Requirements

  • Sustained excellence in academic performance.
  • Full-time enrollment in an accredited degree-seeking program in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field, with continued full-time enrollment during the semester following the internship.
  • Hands-on proficiency with advanced data science techniques, including machine learning (such as supervised, unsupervised, deep learning, or reinforcement learning), anomaly detection, statistical analysis, and/or analysis of very large datasets.
  • Computer programming skills; examples include Python, R, C/C++, Java, Scala, Julia, Rust, and MATLAB.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Top Secret U.S. Government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required to be considered for a security clearance.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL is required, as stated in the position’s skills overview.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated interest in serving the public.
  • Active DoD Top Secret Clearance.
  • Experience in some of the listed areas, including machine learning and model evaluation; statistical and exploratory data analysis; large language models and AI-assisted workflows; natural language processing; anomaly detection and predictive modeling; graph analytics; distributed data processing and big-data architectures; data pipeline and ETL development and orchestration; data modeling, schema design, and data quality assessment; cloud-based data platforms and storage; Linux-based development environments; Git; containers; and cloud platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Apply data science, data engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and applied research skills to problems of national importance.
  • Work across the data lifecycle, including data modeling, data processing, statistical analysis, machine learning, and experimentation.
  • Contribute to work in areas such as advanced analytics, AI, data engineering, and software development.
  • Potentially participate in MITRE’s internal research and development program.
