About The Position

The Data Custodian Manager establishes and maintains the processes, standards, and operating procedures used by the Data Custodian team to ensure consistent intake, triage, remediation, and data quality work across supported data domains. The role coordinates custodians across multiple data areas, promotes adherence to enterprise data governance standards, and drives operational consistency as the function grows. The manager owns a designated data domain and performs hands-on individual-contributor work while providing leadership, guidance, coaching, and day-to-day coordination for the broader team. The role develops and maintains playbooks, checklists, and governance processes, applying established Enterprise Data Office standards, templates, and tools. It supports escalations, identifies systemic issues, partners with business stewards and technical teams, and contributes to sustainable data quality solutions. This is a hybrid position based in the Phoenix, Arizona office, requiring onsite work four days per week with the option to work remotely one day per week. The position is not eligible for sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Four to seven years of experience in a data analyst, data quality, data operations, data steward, or data custodian-type role.
  • Demonstrated success in a hands-on data custodian, data steward, data quality analyst, or similar role within a large or matrixed organization.
  • Experience defining or improving team processes, such as intake, triage, or issue-resolution workflows, and documenting them for consistent use.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or onboarding team members while remaining hands-on in the work.
  • A track record of investigating and resolving data-quality issues against business rules, thresholds, and quality dimensions such as completeness, validity, accuracy, timeliness, and reasonableness.
  • Hands-on experience with modern cloud-based data platforms and governance technologies.
  • Experience partnering with business, operations, and IT teams to maintain accurate field data as an organization scales a program or platform.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Data Custodian team by setting priorities, providing day-to-day direction and coaching, onboarding new custodians, addressing escalated or cross-area issues, and overseeing team performance.

  • Serve as the single intake point for field reports and data change requests in the assigned area, ensuring records are corrected through a controlled process rather than direct edits to source systems.
  • Triage issues as working as intended, a data fix, a rule or definition question, or a systemic or enabler gap.
