Data Custodian

Republic Services•Phoenix, AZ

About The Position

The Data Custodian is responsible for maintaining the accuracy, integrity, and quality of operational data within an assigned data domain or geographic area. The incumbent serves as the primary point of contact for data corrections and governance activities, identifies and resolves data discrepancies, performs data quality audits, and ensures updates are accurately reflected within designated systems of record. The Data Custodian partners with Operations, Sales, Human Resources, Information Technology, and other stakeholders to support data-driven business processes, promote data management best practices, and ensure compliance with data quality standards. The incumbent supports operational efficiency and informed decision-making across the organization through the use of business applications, source systems, reporting tools, and data quality dashboards.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on data handling skills, including auditing large datasets, spotting anomalies, and tracing a bad value back to its source.
  • Proficiency in SQL.
  • Working knowledge of data-quality tooling, dashboards, or catalog platforms in modern cloud environments (e.g., Snowflake, data.world, Collibra, Informatica, or similar).
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working across multiple source systems at once.
  • Analytical, detail-oriented mindset with the discipline to document decisions and corrections consistently.
  • Exceptional skill in translating data issues and their business impact into clear terms for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally with Business Data Stewards, Data Owners, and IT/Engineering to resolve issues without owning the technical build.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a track record of establishing and following durable, repeatable data-correction processes.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the single intake point for field reports, issues, and data change requests, so records are corrected in a controlled way.
  • Triage each issue into the correct category: working as intended, a quick data fix, a rule or definition question, or a systemic/training gap.
  • Track data quality over time and monitor data quality reports.
  • Investigate suspect or flagged values, determine the correct value using source systems and business context, and carry the correction through to the system of record.
  • Partner with Business Data Stewards to translate business rules and quality thresholds into practical, repeatable data checks.
  • Work with IT/Data Engineering so pipeline and automation logic reflects real operating conditions in the field.
  • Monitor data completeness, accuracy, validity, timeliness, and reasonableness for assigned attributes against defined thresholds.
  • Contact data or record owners for updating data or perform corrective actions on their own where appropriate.
  • Confirm data completeness and usability for a division before publishing.
  • Assess how process changes affect data, and how data changes affect downstream operations.
  • Escalate recurring or systemic data gaps to IT support for longer-term resolution rather than repeatedly patching the same issue.
  • Maintain clear documentation of how data is created, changed, and corrected within the assigned area.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical benefits coverage, dental plans and vision coverage.
  • Health care and dependent care spending accounts.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • Life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment insurance.
  • Employee and Family Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Employee discount programs.
  • Retirement plan with a generous company match.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
