Data Center Plant Engineer, Controls

Google•Monrovia, IN
•$122,000 - $173,000

About The Position

As a Plant Engineer at Google specializing in Controls and Automation, you will be a key site technical leader responsible for the reliability, efficiency, and continuous improvement of critical data center infrastructure. You will bridge day-to-day operations and systems engineering, taking ownership of site PLCs, DCS, SCADA platforms, and BMS. You will work with senior facility technicians and facility management to support ongoing site operations. You will apply engineering theory to optimize critical cooling and power sequences, manage operational risks, and improve sustainability metrics such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE). You will develop approaches to reduce operational costs while improving data center efficiency, ensure environmental and safety standards are met, identify problems, and make repairs quickly. During emergencies or abnormal conditions, you will manage performance issues and outages to minimize recovery time from failures. The Technical Infrastructure team develops and maintains data centers and Google platforms, and operates the networks that support Google's products and user experience. Individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The listed US compensation is $122,000–$173,000, plus a 15% bonus target, equity, and benefits.

  • 7 years of experience in Controls/Automation in an industrial or commercial environment.
  • Experience with SCADA, EPMS, or BMS, including monitoring, alarm configuration, troubleshooting, and graphical user interface/Human-Machine Interface (HMI) operation.
  • Experience diagnosing software and hardware errors and managing Linux operating systems within an industrial control environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting, programming, or designing PLC or DCS architectures, such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Schneider Electric.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 years of experience working in data centers, manufacturing, power plants, or transmission operations.
  • Direct experience with protective relay configuration, coordination, and testing for medium-to-high voltage power distribution systems, including industrial network design (VLANs, routing, switching, and subnets) for automation.
  • Experience overseeing security patching, firmware updates, access control/identity management, and vulnerability remediation for hardware devices and host operating systems.
  • Experience configuring, troubleshooting, and networking VFDs and other industrial assets over Modbus, TCP/IP, or EtherNet/IP.
  • Deep expertise in data center infrastructure and systems, such as facility monitoring and control systems, thermal dynamics, fluid mechanics, or electrical power distribution networks in a critical environment.
  • Experience collaborating with other business units to meet company goals and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective leadership for critical system troubleshooting, unit commissioning, and repairs or replacements, with minimal supervision and attention to quality, quantity, and timeliness.
  • Serve as the site's subject matter expert on controls systems, including SCADA interfaces, control loops, automation, and instrumentation.
  • Analyze telemetry data to optimize mechanical cooling and electrical power efficiency, and collaborate with design engineers to bring an operational perspective to new infrastructure.
  • Partner with global engineering teams to resolve technical challenges and implement infrastructure changes.
  • Review and approve highly technical Methods of Procedure (MOPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Respond to critical data center events and alarms and serve as a point of escalation for operational issues.
  • Provide engineering support for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations.
  • Optimize critical cooling and power sequences, manage operational risks, and improve PUE and WUE sustainability metrics.
  • Ensure environmental and safety standards are met, identify problems, and make repairs quickly.
