About The Position

The Data Architect defines and governs the enterprise data architecture for a modern Azure-based platform integrating Avatar NX, Salesforce, and financial systems. The role establishes a scalable, consistent, and governed data ecosystem aligned with business and regulatory requirements. A critical responsibility is reverse engineering the Avatar NX EHR data model, given limited vendor documentation, to enable accurate integration, reporting, and long-term data governance. The position designs end-to-end Azure data architecture and enterprise data domains, establishes canonical data models, and defines integration patterns and standards across EHR, CRM, and financial systems. It also leads data governance and standards, documents and versions reverse-engineered models, and creates architecture for transparent, auditable billing and revenue logic. The Data Architect collaborates with Finance, RCM, Operations, IT, and Analytics leadership, and provides architectural guidance to Data Modelers, Developers, and DBAs. This is a remote position for a candidate based in the United States who can work without restrictions in the US from a remote home office. The schedule is 8 a.m.–5 p.m. CST. The salary range is $140,000–$160,000, commensurate with experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years in data architecture, data modeling, or enterprise data engineering.
  • Hands-on experience designing data platforms in Azure, including ADF, Synapse, Data Lake, and SQL.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating EHR, CRM, and financial systems.
  • Proven experience working with EHR vendor databases such as Netsmart Avatar NX, Epic, Cerner, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience reverse engineering undocumented or poorly documented schemas, including identifying table relationships and key linkages, reconstructing data models, and building ERDs from live databases rather than vendor documentation.
  • Experience translating complex clinical and billing data structures into usable enterprise models.
  • Ability to work with stakeholders to validate inferred logic, such as encounter flows, billing rules, and documentation timing.
  • Strong expertise in relational and dimensional data modeling.
  • Experience establishing canonical data models across clinical, financial, and operational domains.
  • Experience implementing data governance frameworks, lineage, and data quality controls.
  • Advanced SQL Server expertise, including querying, schema analysis, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with large, complex, highly normalized transactional systems.
  • Proficiency with source control and version management tools such as Git, including branching strategies, pull requests, and versioning of data models, pipelines, and schema definitions.
  • Must be US-based and able to work without restrictions in the US from a remote home office.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the healthcare industry and data domains such as clinical workflows, RCM, and compliance.
  • Experience supporting finance and revenue cycle reporting, including AR, billing, and reconciliation.
  • Familiarity with Power BI, SSRS, or other reporting platforms.
  • Experience working in environments with limited vendor transparency or documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Design end-to-end Azure data architecture, including ingestion, staging, curated, and reporting layers.
  • Define enterprise data domains such as Clinical, RCM, CRM, and Finance.
  • Establish canonical data models, including models for Patient, Encounter, Claim, and Revenue.
  • Reverse engineer and document the Avatar NX data model, including table structures, relationships, data flows, enterprise ERDs, logical models, and mappings from vendor-specific schemas to normalized structures.
  • Interpret and model data from InterSystems Caché/IRIS, where the SQL layer abstracts a non-relational core.
  • Define integration patterns across Avatar NX, Salesforce, and financial systems.
  • Standardize data contracts and exchange patterns, including batch, API, and event-driven methods.
  • Establish standards for naming, definitions, and data quality.
  • Implement governance for billing rules and derived logic.
  • Lead development of a data catalog, business glossary, and lineage framework.
  • Ensure reverse-engineered models are documented and version-controlled.
  • Manage data models, pipelines, and architectural artifacts using enterprise source control practices to support auditability and traceability.
  • Define architecture for tracking inferred rule outcomes within Azure.
  • Enable reconciliation between NX and downstream financial systems.
  • Ensure billing logic is auditable, traceable, and explainable.
  • Partner with Finance, RCM, Operations, IT, and Analytics leadership.
  • Provide architectural guidance to Data Modelers, Developers, and DBAs.
