About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate racial and other inequities leading to premature mortality. CHECW focuses on increasing visibility of harm caused by racist policies and advocating for redress in impacted NYC communities. It addresses inequities across community and healthcare systems through partnerships, considering environmental and commercial determinants, and both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well-being. The Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building (HEBC) within CHECW works to implement collective strategies that build community power and capacity to address health inequities and social determinants of health. The Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI), rooted in health equity principles, employs a multi-strategy, trauma-informed approach to reduce violence risk factors. VPI emphasizes the social context of violence in disinvested communities, prioritizes solutions addressing behavioral and structural impediments, and collaborates across systems to reinvest in violence-affected neighborhoods. VPI supports hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) to reduce readmissions and retaliations, and the Strong Messenger Project (SMP) to provide therapeutic mental health support to community partners.
