About The Position

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is seeking an academically oriented Cytogenetics / Genomics (“Cytogenomics”) Laboratory Director with 2 to 10+ years of experience. This faculty member will participate in a busy laboratory service, which includes constitutional and somatic testing, utilizing methodologies such as cytogenetics, FISH, SNP microarray, and NGS. The role involves reviewing data and interpreting results for precision oncology and clinical genetics. The successful candidate will have experience in developing, validating, and implementing new molecular genomic and genetic tests within a CAP-accredited laboratory. Responsibilities include fostering collaborations with clinicians and researchers, serving as a resource to technologists, instructing medical students, and participating in the training of pathology residents and fellows. The candidate will play a key educational role in the ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in Molecular Genetic Pathology and collaborate closely with Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology teams.

Requirements

  • PhD with American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) certification (or eligibility) in Cytogenetics and Genomics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics OR MD or equivalent degree with relevant pathology specialty training and certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic, Clinical, and Molecular Genetic Pathology.
  • At least two years of experience in Cytogenetics or Genomics.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in South Carolina.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a busy laboratory service including constitutional and somatic testing.
  • Review data and interpret results for techniques employed in the clinical work-up of cases for precision oncology and clinical genetics.
  • Develop, validate, and implement new molecular genomic and genetic tests within a CAP-accredited laboratory.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with clinicians and researchers.
  • Serve as a resource to technologists at the bench.
  • Instruct medical students.
  • Participate in the training of pathology residents and fellows.
  • Actively participate in the academic mission of the Pathology Department and NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center programs.
  • Play a key educational role in the ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in Molecular Genetic Pathology.
  • Collaborate closely with the Surgical Pathology and Hematopathology teams, including their trainees.
