About The Position

The Department of Pharmacology and Immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) invite applications for a Research Instructor position. This posting is for a faculty-level mass spectrometrist affiliated with the Department of Pharmacology and Immunology, the Digestive Disease Research Center Core for Proteomics and the I3 Umbrella Omics Core. This position will involve significant collaborative and instructional interactions within the different centers represented by the four current proteomic center faculty, including the Department of Pharmacology and Immunology, Digestive Disease Research Center Core for Proteomics and the I3 Umbrella Omics Core. Extensive experience in training new users on sample preparation and instrument operation for mass spectrometry analysis is a requirement. New users may be at any level of professional experience and education levels, ranging from high school level to doctorate degree education levels, and ranging from student to faculty professional levels. Additional responsibilities will include preparing joint grant proposals with MUSC researchers and potentially other collaborators outside of MUSC. Organization and teaching in an annual workshop of mass spectrometry applications hosted at MUSC is expected. Excellent data analysis skills are required. Successful applicants will have expertise in MALDI mass spectrometry and electrospray tandem mass spectrometry for analysis of glycans, metabolites, lipids and proteins. Experience at training new personnel in performing multiple experimental workflows and teaching the underlying chemical and biomedical principles is required, minimum 4 years. At least 4 years experience with vendor instrument operating software, data analysis and different proteomic and metabolomic databases is also required. Prior experience in working at biotech companies and/or mass spectrometer vendors is highly desired.

Requirements

  • An M.S. or B.S. in chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical science or equivalent.
  • A minimum of seven years relevant experience at the time of appointment.
  • Extensive experience in training new users on sample preparation and instrument operation for mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience at training new personnel in performing multiple experimental workflows and teaching the underlying chemical and biomedical principles.
  • At least 4 years experience with vendor instrument operating software, data analysis and different proteomic and metabolomic databases.
  • Excellent data analysis skills.
  • Expertise in MALDI mass spectrometry and electrospray tandem mass spectrometry for analysis of glycans, metabolites, lipids and proteins.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually.
