About The Position

We are searching for an undergraduate student to join our Cyber Security Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). The successful candidate will assist our Security Operation Center (SOC). Primary functions will be in assisting this unit in a blue team capacity. ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

Requirements

  • Students studying within the field of Information and Cyber Security, Information Science and Technology, or Computer Science/Engineering are highly encouraged to apply.
  • You will be subject to a government security investigation, and you must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
  • Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
  • All positions at ARL require candidates to possess the ability to obtain a government security clearance; you will be notified during the interview process if this position is subject to a government background investigation.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with defensive cyber tools such as Firewalls, SIEM, XDR/EDR, CASB, FIM, IDS/IPS
  • Networking fundamentals
  • System administration and troubleshooting
  • Scripting (bash, python, etc)
  • Mitre ATT&CK and D3FEND frameworks

Responsibilities

  • Conduct phishing response and mitigation activities
  • Conduct scanning and review of software and hardware
  • Function as a level 1 Soc Analyst and triage all tickets for that unit
  • Aide team in organization wide incident response efforts
  • Assist in computer and network forensics
  • Help endpoint and network monitoring efforts
  • Work with senior members to promote proactive defensive efforts (eg. threat hunting)
  • Perform security engineering tasks internal to cyber defense tools
