About The Position

Capital Power is seeking an innovative and motivated individual for a temporary (up to 12 months), full-time Cyber Security Intern position within the IS Cyber Security team. This role offers valuable hands-on experience to develop critical skills in the field of Cyber Security. The intern will support the operation of Capital Power’s cyber security infrastructure, including participating in daily operational tasks such as monitoring health, incident management, change management, patching, security reviews, and incident investigations. The position requires strong documentation skills, attention to detail, effective time management, ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, great interpersonal skills, adherence to industry best practices, and an understanding of critical systems. The intern will contribute by providing support services for IS Cyber Security, collaborating with internal teams and managed service providers, supporting a diverse set of cyber security hardware, services, and processes, and ensuring adaptable, customer-focused support. The role involves participating in security reviews for key systems and vendors, meeting Service Level Agreements, providing input into cyber security team decisions, and participating in the investigation and resolution of cyber security events using best-practice troubleshooting and investigative skills.

Requirements

  • Diploma/Degree in Computing Science, Computer Engineering, or Management Information Systems.
  • Experience with Operating Systems, TCP/IP networks and basic Cybersecurity concepts.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting of application and network issues using logs and common tools.
  • Common networking protocols such as TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS and TLS.
  • Knowledge of Active Directory and Windows Domains.
  • Understanding of cloud services and data governance as it relates to cyber security.
  • Self-motivated, organized, customer focused, detail-oriented, and effective communicator.
  • Problem solving, results driven and action-oriented when working on assigned tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in or recent completion of the NAIT Cybersecurity Post Diploma Certificate Program will be an asset.
  • Experience working in a corporate environment as a member of a team would be an asset but not a requirement.
  • Experience with scripting is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support the operation of Capital Power’s cyber security infrastructure.
  • Participate in daily operational tasks including monitoring health, incident management, change management, patching, security reviews, and incident investigations.
  • Provide support services for IS Cyber Security.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams and managed service providers.
  • Support a sophisticated and diverse set of cyber security hardware, services, and processes for multiple business areas.
  • Ensure the team provides highly adaptable and customer-focused support services for all Capital Power business units, including support for the Service Desk.
  • Participate in appropriate security reviews for key systems and vendors.
  • Provide support services that meet outlined “Service Level Agreements”.
  • Provide input into decisions within the cyber security team, ensuring standard methodology is followed.
  • Participate in the investigation and resolution of cyber security events.
  • Apply appropriate troubleshooting / investigative skills and ensure best-practice steps are followed in developing, testing, and implementing solutions.
