About The Position

The Lead Application Engineer is a technical leader within the engineering team, contributing to commercial strategy through technical and economic understanding of the high-voltage substation market. The role serves as the technical point of reference throughout the Inquiry-to-Order (ITO) phase, developing technical solutions for high-voltage substations and electrical grids. The engineer ensures technical proposals are accurate and clear, including equipment specifications, single-line diagrams, layout drawings, AC/DC load sizing, clarifications and exceptions, deliverable quantities, work scope, and estimates for engineering, installation, testing, and commissioning. These proposals are based on customer specifications and applicable standards. The role also conducts preliminary substation studies, supports supplier and subcontractor requests for quotations, assists with customer presentations, and develops estimating methodologies, templates, and libraries. Working with the Proposal Manager, application engineering team, multidisciplinary engineers, project managers, and sourcing, the engineer develops engineering, procurement, and construction estimates for utility, industrial, and renewable substation projects, including protection and control, systems and communications, Balance of Plant, FACTS, and HVDC. The role promotes technically strong, competitive proposals that meet customer requirements, provide value, and reduce performance risk. It also contributes market knowledge and technical judgment to bid strategies and builds consensus among stakeholders. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or an equivalent technical degree, at least five years of relevant substation and power-sector experience, and at least two years of technical proposal writing and tender-management experience. French and English proficiency is required for communication with international colleagues, suppliers, carriers, and customers. Travel of up to 20%, potentially international, is required. Relocation assistance is provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent technical degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience in substation design, engineering, specification development, cost estimation, and construction, and in power transmission or generation projects in the energy sector.
  • At least 2 years of experience in technical proposal writing and tender management.
  • Availability to travel up to 20%, potentially internationally, and comply with relevant company travel and tax policies.
  • Fluency in French and English, spoken and written.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with full turnkey high-voltage substation solutions, including EPC/EPCI and civil works.
  • Results-oriented approach and ability to develop technical strategies to improve bid success rates.
  • Expertise in power transmission and distribution systems and equipment, substations, and protection devices.
  • Experience developing and estimating engineering design packages, including drawings, calculations, studies, and bills of materials.
  • Experience with power system studies and medium-, high-, extra-high-, and ultra-high-voltage equipment.
  • Knowledge of project estimating methods and cost engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of physical high-voltage and extra-high-voltage substation design and construction, including foundations and site preparation.
  • Knowledge of substation protection and control schemes, SCADA communications, testing, commissioning, and maintenance.
  • Construction, field testing, and commissioning experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience using CSA, IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards and codes.
  • Working knowledge of power-system automation equipment, SCADA applications, and communications applications.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng./PE) license in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for request-for-quotation packages for subcontractors and electrical equipment suppliers.
  • Support the commercial team during technical customer presentations.
  • Develop methodologies, templates, and libraries to improve estimating accuracy and efficiency.
  • Write technical specifications for equipment and services and work with project managers and sourcing to manage quotations and vendor responses.
  • Collaborate with the Proposal Manager, application engineering team, and multidisciplinary engineers to develop EPC estimates for substations, protection and control, systems and communications, BOP, FACTS, and HVDC projects.
  • Deliver technically high-quality proposals that are clear, competitive, responsive to customer specifications, and designed to reduce overall performance risk.
  • Apply knowledge of relevant markets, customer economic value, best practices, competition, and market differentiators to support winning bid strategies.
  • Use judgment to solve moderately complex technical and operational problems.
