About The Position

The Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities. All district employees must demonstrate regular and predictable attendance, support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan, engage in civility, respect, and professionalism, and maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of their positions.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in large scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance work.
  • Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Writes simple correspondence.
  • Effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Must possess basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
  • Add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions. Deals with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
  • Internal HCPS email system and HCPS district website as appropriate.
  • Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, handling, keyboarding, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting/smelling, near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Up to 55 pounds; over 55 pounds requires a 2-person lift.
  • Both dominant and non-dominant hand; overhead.
  • Noise intensity: 3, moderate; extreme cold, extreme heat, wet/humid, work with cleaning chemicals – wear eye protection, vibration/impact, work with or near heavy equipment, proximity to moving mechanical parts, exposure to electrical shock, fumes, or airborne particles

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors, as well as vacuums and shampoos carpets, as applicable; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all horizontal and vertical surfaces as assigned; removes and disposes of waste products daily; maintains clean custodial closets.
  • Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks of facility, including but not limited to changing light bulbs, changing toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing window(s), delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities/meetings, and assembling/moving furniture.
  • Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program, including but not limited to mowing (pushing and/or riding), weeding, weed-eating, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate.
  • Opens or closes and secures facility, including but not limited to gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turns on/off all lights, making sure that grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Performs work duties independently and/or as part of a custodial crew depending upon the nature of the task, works cooperatively in group situations, exhibits tact and consideration, displays positive outlook and pleasant manner, offers assistance and support to co-workers, and works actively to resolve conflicts.
  • Assumes modified duties and responsibilities of the Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader in the event of absence or vacancy.
  • Possess basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
  • Schedules time off in advance. Begins working on time. Keeps absences within guidelines. Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent. Arrives at meetings and appointments on time.
  • Responds to requests for service and assistance. Follows instructions and responds to management direction. Takes responsibility for own actions. Meets attendance and punctuality guidelines.

  • Dresses appropriately for position. Keeps self well-groomed. Wear School Board provided uniform daily.
