About The Position

Under the supervision of the Custodial Working Foreman and Deputy Director of Facilities, perform cleaning, washing, wiping, dusting, sweeping and other duties to maintain assigned areas of buildings, office spaces, common areas and grounds in a clean, orderly and sanitary condition. Perform all other related duties for the Facilities Services Division within the Department of Facilities following established methods and procedures. This position works Tuesday through Friday: 2pm-10pm and Saturday: 7am-3pm.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience in custodial, facilities, or building maintenance work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to read and understand written instructions, safety information, and product labels, and complete basic written records.
  • A valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to learn the basic operation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems and in performing minor maintenance on plant equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish color-coded materials.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain buildings - offices, rooms, halls, cafeterias, washrooms, lavatories, common areas and other locations in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition.
  • Sweep and mop floors in hallways, rooms, and other areas.
  • Vacuum floors, dust furniture and fixtures; clean and sanitize bowls, basins, and drinking fountains; clean windows, walls, mats and other areas.
  • Collect, remove, sort, and dispose of waste paper, litter, some work materials, and other refuse.
  • Replenish and maintain inventory and adequate levels of paper towels, toilet paper, soap, hand cleansers, and other supplies.
  • Assist in maintaining grounds by picking up trash and litter and sweeping outside walkways.
  • Shovel and remove snow and/or ice from walkways, stairs, drives, and other areas.
  • Spread ice melt and/or sand as required.
  • Deliver received mail, UPS and other special shipments.
  • May be required to run errands to pick up or deliver items, supplies, packages and mail.
  • May clean police and other vehicles as assigned.
  • May perform basic repair and maintenance functions, such as repair damaged items, furniture and equipment; secure buildings for winter; install or remove window coverings, storm or screen windows and doors, and replace light bulbs; and other minor maintenance work as assigned.
  • Operate industrial equipment such as boilers, snow blower, floor buffing machines, and air conditioning and ventilation systems.
  • May replace heating/ventilation filters and perform routine system maintenance; move, set-up and tear down furniture and appliances, equipment and voting polls; polish furniture and metalwork.
  • Maintain established quality and quantity standards.
  • Follow prescribed safety precautions, established department and Town policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Detect and report improper operations, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, operational, and safe condition.
  • Upon request, may assist other tradesmen as needed.
  • Provide building/shift coverage, including occasionally covering other shifts, or weekends, as needed.
  • May be required to cover delivery duties in the absence of the Town van driver.
  • Respond to emergency calls at night and on weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.
