About The Position

Muscatine Schools is hiring a Part-Time 2nd Shift Custodian for Susan Clark Junior High. The schedule for this position is 4:00pm - 10:00pm, Monday through Friday. This position is scheduled to work during the school-year only, which is a 9 month/year position. A Custodian's main responsibility is to keep the school's appearance clean and maintain a safe school environment that is in good working order. Starting pay for this position is $20.56/hour. Bilingual preferred or highly desirable. The candidate chosen for hire will be required to complete a background check, Work Steps job-specific physical, and training/onboarding with the HR Department and the Custodial Maintenance Department. All essential functions must be performed on-site. All positions are open until filled.

Responsibilities

  • Keep the school's appearance clean, safe and in good working order.
  • Check to ensure all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
  • Raise the American flag at or before 8:00 a.m. and lower it at or after 3:30 p.m.
  • Clean classrooms and corridors as scheduled.
  • Scrub and disinfect rest room floors, shower rooms where applicable and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.
  • Report major repairs needed promptly according to the standard procedure of the department.
  • Report any damage to school property which would include any vandalism or break-ins according to the standard procedure of the department.
  • Remain on school premises during paid hours except for lunch breaks.
  • Share responsibility for opening and closing of building (doors and windows secured, lights off except those left on for safety).
  • Perform lock-downs along with other employees who are equally responsible for insuring the building is secure.
  • Adjust furniture periodically and as needed to meet student needs in the classroom.
  • Clean chalkboards and/or whiteboards as needed.
  • Dust furniture and locker tops as time allows, with emphasis first to computer labs.
  • Keep floors clean and clear and in a good state of preservation by wet mopping and sweeping regularly between scheduled stripping, waxing and buffing.
  • Change accessible filters as needed or as scheduled.
  • Wash windows inside and out as time and weather permits.
  • Wash door panels, lockers and wall areas as needed, ensuring as a top priority that school entrances are clean and presentable.
  • Keep building premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean.
  • Notify maintenance of irregularities in heat, ventilation, or air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Remove snow and ice from grounds, shovel, salt, plow, sand, mow, and clear litter and rubbish.
  • Perform locker repair and maintenance.
  • Perform yard keeping chores and pick up litter as time permits.
  • Keep inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel and notify courier or operating department for requisition.
  • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required.
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash, rubbish and waste.
  • Make minor building repairs as time, materials, tools and knowledge allow, calling Supervisor or seeking other assistance if needed.
  • Perform duties during the summer throughout the district, which may include painting, sanding, washing walls, changing light bulbs, cleaning filters, repairing desks and chairs, stripping floors, refinishing/waxing floors, steaming clean kitchens, washing furniture, in-depth cleaning of areas that require moving of furniture, and other duties of a similar nature.
