About The Position

This position performs heavy manual cleaning work in and around schools, buildings, and grounds. The custodian cleans and maintains classrooms, restrooms, dining areas, and other facilities; carries out floor and carpet care; assists with facility setups; and performs grounds and basic maintenance tasks. The role requires following instructions for the safe use and mixing of cleaning chemicals and supplies, using assigned personal protective equipment, and being able to stand and work continuously while handling physical tasks.

Requirements

• Completion of eighth grade, with proof if attainable, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Some knowledge of the methods and equipment used in custodial tasks.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Ability to perform work requiring strength.
• Ability to work continuous hours while standing.
• Ability to learn routine custodial and janitorial duties.
• Ability to stand for most of the day and frequently lift, carry, move, or position objects weighing 20 to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors and handle cleaning solvents and solutions.
• Ability to use assigned personal protective devices and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Empty trash containers, pencil sharpeners, and other receptacles.
• Clean chalk trays and chalkboards.
• Dust ledges, furniture, lights, and similar surfaces.
• Replace spent light bulbs and refill restroom dispensers.
• Strip, clean, burnish, and finish hard-surface floors.
• Vacuum and shampoo carpets.
• Clean and disinfect drinking fountains.
• Help maintain clean, safe, and sanitary toilet, shower, and dining-room facilities.
• Wash walls, windows, and glass surfaces.
• Follow instructions for the proper use and mixture of chemicals and supplies.
• Assist lunchroom and warehouse personnel with stacking heavy crates, boxes, and similar items.
• Maintain dining-room cleanliness as assigned.
• Assist with setting up facilities for meetings, classrooms, and events.
• Perform school-plant maintenance and lawn and shrub care using lawnmowers, power edgers, hand lawn and garden tools, and related equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
