About The Position

Under general and limited supervision, the Custodian performs a wide variety of custodial maintenance duties to provide a clean, orderly, and safe environment in public buildings. The position cleans, maintains, and performs light maintenance in assigned spaces, with no supervisory responsibilities. The role may involve working around noise, outdoors, vibration, confined spaces, chemicals, and mechanical or electrical hazards. The employee must be able to travel to different sites and perform work with a medium strength demand, including lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying up to 25 pounds.

Requirements

Knowledge of tools, chemicals, materials, methods, and best practices used in custodial operations.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in custodial operations.
Knowledge of the proper use and care of tools, materials, and equipment common to custodial operations.
Ability to operate custodial equipment, including vacuum cleaners, carpet machines, and buffers.
Ability to maintain a cleaning schedule and work with a minimum of supervision.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal and external contacts.

Formal or informal education or training sufficient to ensure the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
A current valid Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment, or a military waiver.
Ability to travel to different sites.
Ability to meet the position’s medium strength demand: lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying up to 25 pounds.

Nice To Haves

Experience in custodial work is preferred.

Responsibilities

Sweep, vacuum, and mop floors.
Dust and clean offices and other work areas.
Collect and remove waste.
Clean and restock restrooms.
Strip and wax floors.
Move or lift furniture, boxes, and other materials.
Open and close the facility for use and secure it for closing.
Operate carpet extractor machines and buffers to polish floors.
Operate a City or personal vehicle to travel between City facilities and complete assigned work.
Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
