About The Position

Under general supervision, the Custodian Specialist is responsible for cleaning services that provide a clean, safe, attractive, and healthy place for our patrons and staff. Typical duties include facility cleaning, set-up of meeting rooms and library equipment and inventory control of cleaning supplies. This role will primarily be focused on carpet cleaning and providing back-up to other Custodian Specialists. The incumbent can expect to be assigned work at any of the KRL branches. This position reports to the Facilities Supervisor. The typical custodial shift is from 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM. This posting may be used to fill up to two openings. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by the Washington Public Employees Association/UFCW local 365.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two years of custodial experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the requirements of the job.
  • A valid Washington state driver's license
  • Safe driving record
  • Three years of driving experience

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to learn to use and operate both light and commercial cleaning equipment safely, such as vacuums, carpet cleaners, floor scrubbers/strippers/waxers/polishers and other cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals, cleaning agents, disinfectants, sanitizers, degreasers, and lubricants.
  • Ability to practice and enforce appropriate safety procedures.
  • Ability to organize supplies and materials and to order replacement materials within established guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with a diverse audience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical and safety instructions, warnings, and other written materials.

Responsibilities

  • Use commercial and household materials and equipment to clean and re-supply restrooms, facilities, public areas, and offices in assigned building and building areas.
  • Clean and disinfect areas as directed to slow the spread of infectious pathogens.
  • Vacuum and spot clean carpets.
  • Gather and dispose of trash and recycling, including picking up trash and cleaning sidewalks on a regular basis.
  • Replenish restroom supplies; wash walls and windows, dust furniture, polish metal work.
  • Clean lighting fixtures, windows, windowsills, window blinds, screens, tops of windows, door, frames, and other areas.
  • Respond to work requests, including, but not limited to dry or liquid spills, toilet clogs/overflows, bio-fluid cleanup (blood, vomit, urine, feces, etc.), graffiti, vandalism, cleanup of drug paraphilia, and other day to day cleanup as needed in a public setting.
  • Maintain inventory of housekeeping supplies and order as needed.
  • Attend meetings, trainings as required.
  • Provide internal and external customer service.
  • Manage time effectively to complete tasks within scheduled shift.
  • Ensure safety of the building including locking doors and monitoring security.
  • Supports a safe work environment.
  • Dust furniture, shelving and various other areas.
  • Heavy cleaning, performed on a regular schedule, may include scrubbing, stripping, waxing and polishing floors.
  • Report evidence of damage and vandalism.
  • Replace light bulbs and batteries, as needed.
  • Set up meeting rooms for library events.
  • May load and transport materials, equipment, or refuse.
  • Handle and process recycling materials.
  • May on occasion perform custodial duties at other library locations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Provide excellent customer service by showing sensitivity to cultural differences and diverse backgrounds when interacting with patrons, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Knowledge and support of Kitsap Regional Library's principles of intellectual freedom.

  • Effectively work both independently, with limited direction or supervision, as well as within a team.
