About The Position

This position involves performing a variety of general custodial duties and light groundskeeping work to maintain school buildings and facilities. Additionally, the role includes driving a school bus safely to designated destinations, monitoring student behavior during transit, and adhering to school district procedures. The custodian responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms and windows, emptying trash, and performing minor maintenance. The bus driver responsibilities include safe operation of the bus, pre-trip inspections, student supervision, and incident reporting.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • Two years of experience in custodial work, or a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job functions.
  • 5 years of responsible driving experience.
  • Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course.
  • Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination.
  • Must have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results.
  • Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to perform work involving physical strength for extended periods of time.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
  • Requires the ability to read simple forms.
  • Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format.
  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using custodial equipment.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as custodial equipment.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
  • Requires valid NC driver’s license and school bus driver’s license.
  • General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in custodial work.
  • General knowledge of safety precautions and warning signals regarding school building equipment.
  • General understanding of the proper procedures for handling hazardous wastes and hazardous substances.
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
  • Ability to follow a written schedule.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

  • Maintain records of names and addresses of students, locations and times of stops, route information, and time sheets.
  • Administrative skills to implement established policies and procedures regarding student transportation, enforcing rules of student conduct and discipline.
  • Communication skills in dealing with students daily; communicating with parents regarding bus routes and discipline problems; and advising the transportation department of bus malfunctions.
  • Leadership skills to maintain discipline on the bus.
  • Manual skills to maintain bus cleanliness.
  • Mechanical skills to detect bus malfunction.
  • Planning skills to develop student seating arrangements.
  • Common arithmetical function to count the number of students on the bus and to complete time.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, shampoos, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces.
  • Cleans restroom areas and replenishes supplies.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures.
  • Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture.
  • Empties trash receptacles and deposits recyclable material.
  • Inspects heating system and patrols buildings for safety or maintenance issues.
  • Sweeps sidewalks, polices grounds, shovels snow, and applies de-icing compounds.
  • Disinfects high-touched and widespread areas.
  • Opens and secures buildings, adjusts heating/air conditioning, and turns lights on/off.
  • Arranges furniture for meetings and events.
  • Lifts and moves furniture, equipment, and supplies.
  • Drives bus safely to destination and return.
  • Conforms to traffic rules and regulations.
  • Performs vehicle pre-checks and reports malfunctions.
  • Follows school district regulations for breakdowns and accidents.
  • Keeps the bus clean.
  • Follows school district procedures for assigned bus routes.
  • Picks up and drops off students at designated times and stops.
  • Ensures students depart the bus at their usual stops.
  • Determines that all students leave the bus at both ends of the route.
  • Monitors students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.
  • Takes suitable action to resolve incidents between students.
  • Reports inappropriate student behavior to school authorities.
  • Performs other related functions as directed by the supervisor.
