About The Position

Works under direct supervision to perform a variety of janitorial functions for an assigned area. The position is classified at Pay Grade 41H, with salary commensurate with experience and education. The employee must pass a physical examination and have the manual dexterity needed to use common cleaning devices. The work may require working outdoors or in inclement weather. This position is subject to a background check; only convictions substantially related to potential job duties will be considered, and they will not automatically disqualify a candidate. Employees hired after September 1, 1986, must reside in Shelby County and continue to reside there as a condition of employment, subject to the stated public-safety and civil-service exceptions.

Requirements

One year of experience in custodial services.
High school diploma or GED.
Proof of education, training, and/or experience is required.
Ability to learn simple tasks related to janitorial work.
Ability to deal with others courteously.
Ability to follow instructions.
Must pass a physical examination.
Must have manual dexterity to use common cleaning devices.
Must be able to work outdoors or in inclement weather.
Shelby County residency is required for employees hired after September 1, 1986, except for the specified public safety/civil-service positions.

Responsibilities

Dust, clean, polish, and wax furniture, fixtures, woodwork, and equipment.
Wash windows and clean blinds.
Sweep, mop, wax, and polish floors.
Dispose of waste materials.
Open and close offices and move furniture.
Perform cleaning necessary to maintain bathrooms.
Replace paper towels and maintain soap containers.
Keep utility storage rooms orderly by cleaning lockers and equipment and arranging supplies.
Perform other related duties as required or directed.
