This role is responsible for providing essential support for the operational maintenance and sanitation of campus buildings to ensure a safe, functional, clean, efficient, and attractive living and learning environment. Duties include cleaning assigned areas to standard, troubleshooting issues, responding to service requests, and addressing emergencies or unforeseen situations as needed. The position also involves project cleaning and deep cleaning throughout the year, with assignments rotating based on departmental needs and cross-training opportunities. At this level, the employee is expected to have basic custodial knowledge and skills, including hard floor care, carpet care, and sanitation practices.

Requirements

  • Completion of 9th grade. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219 .
  • All applicants must be authorized to work for any U.S. employer.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position, and the university cannot accommodate H‑1B transfers or employment-based visa processing for individuals currently sponsored by another employer.
  • Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ years of previous work experience in a custodial or similar role.
  • Ability to use small and large tools for essential tasks (floor care equipment, mop/mop bucket, dust mop, broom, scrub pad, radio, etc.).
  • Experience with standard office software applications and devices for work order systems (IWMS).
  • Adaptable to work assignments and flexible for urgent trade requirements.
  • Ability to comprehend safety guidelines and use approved chemicals by Environmental Health & Safety to perform essential job functions.
  • Capable of operating a fleet vehicle as necessary.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated capabilities in interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, calculation, reading, evaluating, comprehension, and organizing.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and stock restrooms and other common-use facilities according to standards, including sinks, shower/tubs, toilets, stalls, receptacles, mirrors, etc. Apply knowledge of industry sanitation practices and chemicals.
  • Vacuum carpeted areas, including moving/replacing furniture and spot cleaning as needed.
  • Sweep, dry/wet mop floors, stairwells, entries, and other assigned areas.
  • Perform waste removal, including trash and recycling.
  • Conduct surface cleaning such as dusting, wiping, and scrubbing of furniture, walls, equipment, kitchen appliances, and more.
  • Shampoo and extract carpeted areas and/or upholstery.
  • Refinish flooring through stripping, waxing, and buffing (including tile and VCT).
  • Clean windows, glass, and building entries.
  • Assist with inventory control and security, maintaining custodial closets in an organized manner.
  • Support all university, local, state, and federal guidelines, regulations, and policies.
  • Keep accurate time and job records of assigned work using electronic CMMS equipment.
  • Participate in all required safety training and classes.
  • Collaborate with other campus departments as needed.
  • Report deficiencies such as maintenance issues, health, or sanitation concerns.
  • Provide support to other Facilities Operations areas during personnel shortages, emergencies, or as otherwise assigned.
