The Custodial Crew Leader is a working supervisor that assists in scheduling and managing the custodial crew by assigning duties and instructing new workers in the proper use of equipment and materials, to achieve a high level of cleanliness. This role involves determining the proper distribution of employees and materials for a particular day’s cleaning program by inspecting assigned building(s) to ensure an adequate cleaning job is completed. The leader gives general supervision by assigning tasks and reviewing the work of the custodial crew, and assists in training new crew members in the proper use of equipment and materials through demonstration and suggestion to ensure proper application of chemicals and minimum breakdown of equipment. The position ensures that work standards are being adhered to by inspecting assigned work areas and completing inspection reports for review by supervisor, and maintains time sheets for individual crew members. Additionally, the Custodial Crew Leader maintains adequate stock of supplies by ordering as necessary within a pre-established budget guideline and fosters positive public relations with departments by responding to specific cleaning requests. The role also includes performing various cleaning tasks such as changing light bulbs, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, shampooing, steam cleaning, stripping, waxing, polishing, buffing floors, carpets, and furniture, dumping ash cans and garbage, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, cleaning spills, and washing windows, walls, metal, and woodwork. Minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance and repairs, such as painting, floor covering, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical work, are also part of the duties. The Custodial Crew Leader inspects and maintains assigned custodial equipment and small tools, opens and closes facilities, and may inspect facilities before and after each use. Record keeping of work completed and maintaining current skills in proper and safe techniques of building maintenance are essential. The role may involve moving and setting up furniture, serving on employee committees, and performing other assigned duties as requested.
