About The Position

The Louisiana State Museum’s collections and educational programs stimulate awareness and appreciation of our state’s rich and diverse history and culture. This is a full-time position located at the State Museum in New Orleans, LA. This position will be filled as a Job Appointment. In the event that funds become available for a permanent position, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment. Join our team as a Curator and play a vital role in connecting students, educators, and the community with engaging educational experiences. This position is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with schools and teachers through outreach initiatives, coordinating and scheduling group visits, and developing creative educational resources that enhance learning opportunities. The Curator will also support a variety of educational programs and events, helping to create meaningful and interactive experiences that inspire curiosity and foster a deeper appreciation for our collections and mission.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in museum studies, a humanities field, historic preservation, or fine arts; OR A bachelor’s degree in forestry, wildlife or natural resource management, botany, biology, or ecology.

Responsibilities

  • Managing group reservations to the 5 New Orleans properties: The Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint, the Presbytere, the Cabildo, the 1850 House, and Madame John’s Legacy.
  • Scheduling group visits in Galaxy and maintaining the calendar of group visits.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for teachers and group coordinators, including sending pre-visit resources and follow up on surveys.
  • Conducting outreach to schools, teachers, and other educational organizations, including managing the education newsletter and specialized program outreach.
  • Maintaining records of schools and teachers visiting the museums.
  • Coordinating guided experiences with the Education Curator, contract teaching artists, and volunteer docents, including scheduling teaching artists and working with the Education Curator and Friends of the Cabildo to book docent guided visits.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of educational programming by managing tasks.
  • Managing registration for adult courses and family days.
  • Assisting with facilitation of adult courses, family days, and public programming.
  • Assists the Curator of Education in the development of lesson plans and exhibit guides that support Grade Level Expectations.
  • Collaborate with the Curator of Education and our partners at Friends of the Cabildo to support and implement docent training.
  • Collaborate with other museums and cultural institutions to develop new partnerships and programming.
  • Organizing education storage spaces to prepare for programming.
  • Lead school tours and/or greet schools when necessary.
  • Other duties as specified by supervisor.
