About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Culture & Language, the Haisla Culture Camp Guide is responsible for program delivery of the Haisla Nation’s annual Culture Camp. This includes educational workshops, knowledge exchange between young people and elders to increase their knowledge of our culture, resource development and land-based activities to educate youth aged 5 to 12 years about the Haisla Nation’s cultural heritage and the Haisla Nuyem. This Haisla Culture Camp Guide provides guidance, supervision, and support to participants to deliver programs that encourages youth to learn and use the x̄áʼislak̓ala language and ensures a safe, inclusive and caring environment for all participants.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by additional training in child and youth care or outdoor education or equivalent combination.
  • 1 to 3 years of recent related experience.
  • Experience in youth work and outdoor education.
  • Creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals
  • Strong planning, organization and time management skills with ability to be self-directed.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, discretion and adherence to confidentiality requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and various databases, search engines and Outlook/email.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening).

  • Knowledge of First Nations Culture and working in a First Nation’s community is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to camp participants, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating respect for Haisla Nation culture, traditions, and protocols.
  • Lead group activities, team-building exercises, and discussions that promote personal growth, self-confidence, and cultural pride.
  • Help participants navigate challenges and conflicts by using positive communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Create a safe and inclusive space for participants to share their thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences.
  • Implement camp policies and procedures to manage safety risks and respond to emergencies.
  • Help with the day-to-day logistics of camp, including meal preparation, cleaning, and organizing equipment and materials.
  • Assist in delivering culturally relevant programming, including traditional arts, crafts, storytelling, and land-based education.
  • Work alongside Elders and Knowledge Keepers to teach cultural values, x̄áʼislak̓ala language, and Haisla history.
  • Facilitate hands-on activities.
  • Guide participants in outdoor, land-based learning activities, such as camping, fishing, hunting.
  • Promote an understanding of the land, environmental stewardship, and the importance of traditional ecological knowledge.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure the privacy of camp participants.
  • Perform other tasks within scope of position as required.
