About The Position

Reporting to the Culture & Language Manager, the Haisla Culture Camp Cook is responsible for the safe, efficient and organized operation of the kitchen while supporting the Haisla Culture Camp seasonally. This includes meal planning, purchasing and preparing ingredients, adhering to the menu, cleaning the kitchen environment, and following food health and safety procedures. The Cook ensures that menu items are of high quality and distributed in a timely fashion.

Requirements

  • High-school diploma or equivalent.
  • Food Safe Level 1 certificate.
  • First Aid, Level 1.
  • 1 to 3 years of related experience cooking in a professional kitchen environment or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to accommodate a work schedule that may include weekends, evenings, and field trips.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Responsible Adult certificate is a requirement, or willing to obtain.
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization an asset.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and own vehicle is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Keeping an updated inventory of food and supplies.
  • Organizing and planning preparation of food according to posted menu for 30 to 40 people.
  • Teaching Haisla youth cultural food preparation and preservation.
  • Cleaning kitchen area, including cupboards, appliances, and washing dishes.
  • Planning menus, purchasing food, and preparing meals within the allotted budget.
  • Washing, chopping, and seasoning meat, vegetables, and other ingredients for daily use.
  • Preparing and cooking menu items according to nutritional standards, collaborating with other kitchen staff.
  • Planning and/or preparing meals and snacks in advance for the following day, adhering to Food Safe standards and requirements.
  • Storing and disposing of food properly to maintain hygiene and safety.
  • Ensuring sufficient stock and inventory of food, supplies, and equipment.
  • Participating in cleaning the kitchen environment, including dishes, laundry, sweeping, and mopping.
  • Complying with health, safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Ensuring that food is distributed in a high-quality and timely manner.
  • Maintaining cooking equipment and reporting any defective equipment.
  • Performing other duties as required.
