About The Position

The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the T’exelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe. We are Culturally Centered, Future Focused. The Culture and Language Summer Student provides administrative flexible staffing support to the Culture and Language department, including finding timely and effective solutions to the team’s administrative and programming requirements. Culture and Language Summer student will report to the Culture and Language Manger.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Willing to learn about Culture and Language.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Operates as part of a team and is flexible about the boundaries and functions of the job.

  • Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and understands Indigenous culture.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding First Nations' history, culture, and language would be an asset.
  • Preference will be given to those of Aboriginal Ancestry - per Section 16(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Responsibilities

  • Support delivery of Culture and Language programming, where possible.
  • Assist with gathering medicines, harvesting, and other cultural components.
  • Provides support to the Culture and Language team in the Little Chiefs Primary School, Daycare, and Recreation programs.
  • Assists with scheduling of the Culture and Language team and providing other administrative support where necessary.
  • Learning the responsibilities of fire keeping and making sure the grounds and buildings at the Tsqyile building are kept neat and tidy.
  • Help maintain an inventory of ceremonial items, and supplies, for programming and clients.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
  • Contributes to the WLFN’s ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.
