About The Position

The Cultural Ambassador II provides a variety of customer services, including support, interpretation, and translation, while acting as a cultural broker to help create a remarkable patient experience for non-English-speaking patients, family members, and visitors. As a member of the UVA Community Health team, individuals contribute to patient care decisions, support advanced medical technologies, and experience the satisfaction of making a difference in people’s lives every day.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a foreign language (Spanish) medical interpreter and translations in a healthcare role.
  • National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI).
  • Complete departmental oral and written translation assessment.
  • Proficient in the use of computer software, including the Microsoft Office suite or similar.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of authority.
  • Successful completion of the 40-hour “Bridging the Gap” course.
  • Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs. occasionally.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide face-to-face medical interpretation primarily for patients, family members, and visitors.
  • Provide telephone interpretation services, as needed.
  • Assist with document translation, including providing medical document translations for UVA Community Health facilities, as needed.
  • Reviews processes, identifying and recommending opportunities for improvement.
  • Actively participate in identifying opportunities to improve the experience for patients and guests.
  • Participate in community engagement events, as needed.
  • Provides cultural information to facilitate support for a treatment plan.
  • Ensures that information about the patient's outpatient services, hospitalization (i.e., advance directives, consents from treatment, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow-up appointments, and Health Care Education) is accurately communicated.
  • Provide communication and updates to patients and guests and ensure their needs are being met, when applicable.
  • Communicate effectively to meet the needs of all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Respond quickly to irregular and emergency requests.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to patient care and visitor issues.
  • The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
