About The Position

Reporting to the Assistant Director of College Writing, the CSWIM Post-Baccalaureate (“Post Bac”) for Programming assists in the day-to-day operations of the Center for Speaking, Writing, and the Image (“the CSWIM”), working with student staff (“CSWIM Partners”) and Writing Program senior staff to promote a culture of peer mentorship and collaboration in writing and communication. As directed, the Post-Bac will work with the Assistant Director to organize student-facing workshops and CSWIM-partner-facing workshops, perform outreach activities to students regarding the CSWIM’s activities, and represent the CSWIM at various functions on campus. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of College Writing, the CSWIM Post-Bac will also develop a social media strategy for the CSWIM and update the larger Writing Program website and resources as appropriate. In addition, the duties of this individual may include maintaining regular email communication with staff, students, and faculty; helping with setup and clean up for special events; mentoring CSWIM Partners by observing consultations; and assisting with CSWIM assessments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least one year of writing center experience as an undergraduate peer tutor is required.
  • Proficiency with basic Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Google Drive, Instagram, and Facebook is required.
  • Deploy professional skills in social media management and event planning, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the CSWIM’s guiding principles.
  • Be proactive and willing to create and develop events that respond to the needs of the CSWIM Partners and Pomona student community.
  • Work well with a diverse group of students in the Center for Speaking, Writing, and the Image and across campus in other contexts.
  • Have an understanding and appreciation of—and interest and experience in—writing studies, writing program administration, and writing center pedagogy.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, user service, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate, and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees and professional colleagues.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
  • Be friendly, welcoming, and encouraging to anyone who is involved with or wishes to be involved with the CSWIM.
  • Be an effective communicator via email, phone, and in person so that all duties can be completed in a manner that meets the needs of all parties associated with the CSWIM.
  • Handle activities and confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the CSWIM with a high standard of integrity and ethics.
  • Use appropriate organizational and time management skills to keep track of numerous projects and events simultaneously and to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
  • All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship.
  • As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the general operations and duties of the CSWIM, including Welcoming students to the CSWIM, introducing them to available resources, and explaining how they can make appointments.
  • Assisting in organizing and implementing periodic workshops (independently and/or in collaboration with the Assistant Director and/or CSWIM Partners) on writing, speaking, and image-related topics.
  • Assisting in the maintenance and regular updating of the CSWIM’s social media, including the Writing Program website.
  • Collaborating closely with CSWIM Partners to organize social functions, workshops, and other events.
  • Mentor CSWIM Partners by observing consultations.
  • Making recommendations to the Writing Program staff regarding facilities and resources needed to improve the operation of the CSWIM.
  • Assist with the hiring process for new CSWIM Partners in the fall semester.
  • Coordinating special projects/tasks/duties and provide assistance as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
