About The Position

The Cryogenic Engineer will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and validating cryogenic systems that support superconducting magnets and other low-temperature components in our stellarator program. This role requires expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics, as well as experience performing analytical and numerical evaluations of cryogenic performance. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced R&D environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in analytical thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics calculations.
  • Experience performing analytical numerical analysis of thermal/fluid systems using tools such as ANSYS, COMSOL, OpenFOAM, AFT Arrow, REFPROP, GASPAK, HePAK or similar.
  • Understanding of cryogenic system design principles, instrumentation, and materials behavior at low temperatures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative engineering environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with cryogenic systems for superconducting magnets, fusion devices, particle accelerators, or space systems.
  • Familiarity with cryogenic fluids such as liquid helium and liquid nitrogen, including behavior, handling, and hazards.
  • Experience in system-level modeling, controls integration, and data analysis.
  • Experience in creating PFDs, P&IDs, and conducting HAZAN , HAZOPS for such systems is highly preferred.
  • Experience in a fast-paced R&D or startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical thermodynamic, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer calculations on cryogenic systems to support design and performance evaluation.
  • Conduct numerical analysis and modeling of cryogenic systems, including transient and steady-state behavior.
  • Support the design, specification, and integration of cryogenic hardware such as piping, heat exchangers, insulation systems, valves, and cryogenic distribution components.
  • Develop and maintain system-level thermal/fluid models to inform design decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with magnet engineering, vacuum systems, plasma physics, and power systems teams to ensure cryogenic system compatibility and performance.
  • Analyze experimental and operational data to validate models and identify system improvements.
  • Support cryogenic system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operations.
  • Contribute to requirements development, safety analyses, and documentation for cryogenic subsystems.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and partners regarding cryogenic equipment, components, and integration needs.
