About The Position

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta is required.
  • For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.
  • A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License and travel within the province is required.
  • A minimum of one year of call to the bar and relevant legal experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Criminal Litigation is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Bail hearings, charge screening, early case resolution, and alternative measures.
  • Deciding whether to proceed to trial or discontinue a prosecution.
  • Conducting all prosecutions, entering stays of proceedings, withdrawing charges, and plea resolutions.
  • Providing disclosure and drafting legal opinions, briefings, and court documents.
  • Electing to proceed summarily or by indictment, taking positions on sentences, and launching appeals.
  • Working with victims, witnesses, police, and other stakeholders in the justice system.
