About The Position

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. St. Paul is centrally located in northeastern Alberta and serves as a major regional trading hub, supported by surrounding agricultural land and the oil and gas industries but what truly sets it apart are the people who call St. Paul home, proudly living its long‑standing motto as "A People Kind of Place".

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)
  • Active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta
  • For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.
  • A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License
  • Travel within the province is required.
  • Drafting legal opinions, briefings, and court documents professionally and appropriately.
  • Building collaborative working environments with justice system stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to achieve outcomes.
  • Independent decision-making and the ability to prioritize actions effectively.
  • Analyzing situations thoroughly to make informed decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Criminal Litigation is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Bail hearings, charge screening, early case resolution, and alternative measures.
  • Deciding whether to proceed to trial or discontinue a prosecution.
  • Conducting all prosecutions, entering stays of proceedings, withdrawing charges, and plea resolutions.
  • Providing disclosure and drafting legal opinions, briefings, and court documents.
  • Electing to proceed summarily or by indictment, taking positions on sentences, and launching appeals.
  • Working with victims, witnesses, police, and other stakeholders in the justice system.
  • Ensure the public interest is served, and just outcomes are achieved.
  • Ensure courts are provided with fair, accurate, and complete evidence and legal arguments.
  • Ensure serious and complex cases are prosecuted with the highest level of competence.
  • Ensure victims of crimes and their families are supported throughout the legal process.
