About The Position

The Ministry of Justice helps ensure that all Albertans can live in safe and resilient communities while having access to a fair and innovative justice system. Working alongside its partners in law enforcement, family justice, health, the judiciary, criminal justice system and other stakeholders, the ministry has a direct or shared responsibility in all elements of the justice system in Alberta. The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes people charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. In addition, the ACPS develops criminal law policy for the province and supports criminal law consultation with other levels of government.

Requirements

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)
Active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta
Eligibility for Alberta Call to Bar or active membership.
0 - 4 years of legal experience (for Crown Prosecutor 1)
minimum of 4 years of legal experience (for Crown Prosecutor 2)
minimum of 11 years of legal experience (for Crown Prosecutor 3)

Nice To Haves

Strong litigation experience, preferably in criminal law.
Trial preparation and trial experience.
Prosecution experience in criminal law.
Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.

Dealing with victims, witnesses and police
Launching appeals
Assess and determine what is in the public interest.
Exercise prosecutorial discretion independently of extraneous pressures or improper influences.
Ensure that decisions are made in consultation with colleagues in the prosecution of the case, superiors and investigators when required.
Accurately summarize or refer to evidence or testimony.
Determine appropriate charges, have discussions with defense counsel, interview witnesses and other parties in preparation for trial, and conduct examinations in the courtroom.
Draft legal opinions/briefings and court documents professionally and appropriately.
Deal effectively with participants of the justice system such as victims, witnesses, Court. Services staff, investigators, defense lawyers, and the public.
Demonstrate organized and persuasive advocacy skills.
Demonstrate principled and effective negotiation skills.
