About The Position

The City of St. Cloud Police Department is seeking dependable and community-minded individuals to join our team as Crossing Guards. This important role helps ensure students and pedestrians safely travel to and from school while supporting traffic safety in school zones. Work schedules are part-time and occur during key school hours, typically mornings and afternoons, making this a great opportunity for individuals seeking flexible daytime hours.

• Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by six (6) months of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Must successfully complete a state certification course with a passing score of 75% or higher and recertify annually.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
• Must have the ability to keep calm under pressure.
• Must use common sense and sound judgment in dealing with the public, parents and children.
• Must have patience with children and the ability to work with them.
• Must have the ability to learn traffic control and vehicular direction.
• Must have the ability to work with people of different ages and the ability to give instruction in an attempt to educate the public about safe traffic and safety practices.
• Must be able to multi task and work in a high vehicular traffic environment.
• Must have the ability to receive and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Must have the ability to frequently walk or stand, both for extended periods of time without breaks, to run if required; to stoop, bend or carry up to 20 pounds.
• Must have the ability to hear adequately and pass a mandatory hearing test.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to focus and not be color blind.
• Must have the ability to physically move quickly enough to avoid hazardous situation such as vehicular traffic, bicyclists, motorized carts, or scooters or any other hazardous.
• Must have reliable transportation.
• Must have the ability to be flexible with assigned duty locations and be on time, which may vary from time to time.
• Must be able to communicate in English.
• Must be able to pass an occupational health medical exam, drug test and background investigation.
• Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor/felony involving moral character, false statements, perjury, any act that can classified under the enhancement statute of Domestic Violence, resisting a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, any offense committed upon or in the presence of a child or any other offense related to violence.
• Mathematics: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
• Language Ability: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.
• Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Responsibilities

• Safely assist students and pedestrians at designated school crossings
• Help manage traffic flow and promote safe driving in school zones
• Serve as a positive and visible presence for students, families, and the community
• Report safety concerns or hazards to help improve traffic operations
• Stops traffic flow with sign and hand signals at or near school crosswalks and intersections to allow pedestrians to safely cross the roadway.
• Instructs pedestrians, primarily children, in elements of traffic safety.
• Directs pedestrians to remain on curb until traffic has stopped.
• Assists pedestrians with safely crossing the street or roadway.
• Reports suspicious and/or unusual activity.
• Performs related work as assigned.
