About The Position

Vantage is seeking a hands-on Critical Facilities Engineer to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical and electrical systems in its data center facilities. This in-house role is based onsite in Ashburn, Virginia, and works as part of the Site Operations team, which is responsible for the health and performance of facility systems and data modules. The team works onsite around the clock, maintains infrastructure directly rather than routinely outsourcing the work, and serves as a primary point of contact for customers and facility uptime. The successful candidate will work with electrical- and mechanical-focused colleagues to maintain data center infrastructure to a high standard and support uninterrupted customer service. Systems include UPSs, PDUs, diesel generators, ATS equipment, building controls, chillers, CRAH units, power distribution, and related electrical and mechanical equipment. The role involves working independently and within a team, managing projects, responding to safety and emergency situations, coordinating vendors, producing reliability reports, and preparing and following written operating procedures. The position may require work outside normal business hours, including weekends, holidays, late nights, and on-call support. Travel is expected to be less than 5%, occasionally for training.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience maintaining and repairing industrial electrical and mechanical systems in mission-critical facilities; 5 or more years is preferred.
  • Experience with emergency generators, fuel delivery systems, parallel switchgear, medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution, associated controls, critical and essential PDUs, UPSs, switchgear, HVAC, air handling units, computer-grade cooling systems, and building monitoring or control systems.
  • Knowledge of operating, maintaining, repairing, inspecting, and testing critical electrical distribution systems, HVAC systems, and building management or automation equipment.
  • Ability to read commercial building blueprints and understand electrical single-line diagrams and schematics.
  • Knowledge of commonly used mechanical and electrical concepts, practices, and procedures relevant to data center operations.
  • Technical writing skills and experience creating, coordinating, updating, or modifying MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs for critical facility equipment, including researching technical requirements and supporting new systems.
  • Work experience in an electrical or mechanical field is highly desired; strong technical skills and training are emphasized, with intent to obtain a license within a reasonable time.
  • Reliable transportation to report to work for shifts or emergencies.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays, and on-call support.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds one-third of the time; stand, walk, sit, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl, and reach with hands and arms each one-third to two-thirds of the time; use hands to type, handle, and feel; smell, talk, hear, and see at close and distance ranges and distinguish color.

Nice To Haves

  • Data center, mission-critical field service, or mission-critical military experience; military examples include the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, or Coast Guard.
  • Experience with electrical or mechanical systems in a non-mission-critical field-service setting, including larger-tonnage chillers or OEM equipment outside data centers.
  • Experience with equipment manufacturers or providers such as Johnson Controls, York, Trane, Daikin, Vertiv, Eaton, Liebert, Toshiba, Delta, CAT, ABB, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Siemens, or Petra.
  • Formal training in a specialty area such as UPS maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, inspect, test, troubleshoot, and repair critical data center systems, including UPSs, PDUs, diesel generators, ATS equipment, building controls, chillers, and CRAH units.
  • Develop reliability reports to help ensure availability and capacity targets are achieved and maintained with 100% uptime.
  • Coordinate and oversee maintenance vendors to ensure personnel safety, protect critical facility equipment, and maintain power to the critical load.
  • Create required Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), and ensure maintenance activities follow them.
  • Work independently and as part of a team under limited supervision.
  • Manage multiple one-time and ongoing projects.
  • Respond to safety and emergency situations and help maintain a safe and secure work environment.
  • Organize workflow and adapt to changing priorities using discretion and judgment.
  • Maintain frequent contact with employees at all organizational levels and external vendors.
