About The Position

Crisis Response Team Deputies are Specialized Peace Officers who are empowered to function as an investigative arm of the State’s Probate Courts. They are entrusted to exercise professional, compassionate and caring judgment in regards as to which individuals need detention and psychiatric evaluation. Responds to crisis calls from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, Midland County Detention Center, Culver Juvenile Detention Center, other law enforcement agencies, Crisis Response Team and family services agencies, local hospitals and clinics, and members of the community, which involve a possible mentally ill subject. De-escalates crisis situations; negotiation situations, evaluates and determines if emergency hospitalization is required. Works with local Crisis Response Team facilities, local Crisis Response Team agencies, family services agencies, local hospitals, local clinics, and local doctors to assist the person suffering from a mental illness and their families with obtaining appropriate out-patient psychiatric care when there is no need for forcible emergency in-patient treatment; Executes Orders of Protective Custody; Executes Magistrate’s Orders For Emergency Detention and transports to local and State Hospitals across the State when ordered; Diverts appropriate persons from the Criminal Justice System into the Crisis Response Team System.

Requirements

High school graduation, plus at least one year of experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of Police and investigative work; mental illness, dementia and Alzheimer’s, crisis intervention, suicide detention and prevention, Mental Health code, emergency detention process, voluntary detention process, magistrate’s orders, crisis management, hospital acceptance requirements, civil process, warrants, subpoenas, and other legal papers.
Ability to operate computers; safely handle firearms; safely handle less than lethal weapons; read reports, letters, and memos; operate a vehicle in various situations; physically restrain individuals; communicate effectively, both in person and over the phone; and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other law enforcement personnel.
Basic Peace Officer and Mental Health Officer Certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
First Aide and Adult CPR Training for the professional responder by American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Hostage Negotiations Certification by the Texas Association of Hostage Negotiators.
Must have valid Texas driver’s license, provide proof of insurance, and have adequate transportation.
Employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; bend and kneel; and talk and hear.
Employee is frequently required to stand and walk.
Employee must frequently list and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds, such as books and stacks of records, and occasionally must lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds or more.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, peripheral, and color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

Emergency Medical Technician and/or Paramedic Certification by the Texas Office of State Health Services is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Responds to crisis situations where a weapon is involved, that involve a discharged psychiatric patient or MHMR client, or where three or more police interventions have been requested within two weeks.
Responds to crisis situations where the issues appear to be potentially explosive within the family.
Responds to and investigates any “in-process’ suicide attempt or gesture or a suicide attempt or gesture is made, and the individual is still alive.
May be required to negotiate with barricaded subjects.
Serves OPC Hearing Notices.
Transports individuals to OPC Hearings and detention.
Warrantless emergency apprehension and detention.
Warranted emergency apprehension and detention (Magistrate’s Orders).
Investigation of strange or bizarre behavior.
Effectively intervening in situations involving violence and the person is known or suspected of suffering from a mental illness.
Non-criminal interventions with persons exhibiting signs or symptoms of mental illnesses.
Intervening with persons known to have or suspected of having been receiving recent or previous psychiatric or Criss Response Team treatment.
Transports mentally ill people to and from county hospitals, treatment facilities and State Hospitals.
Assists Adult Protective Service Agency with emergency home removals.
Conducts qualification for firearms proficiency.
Educates to community and officers from other agencies about Crisis Response Team and how to respond to persons with a mental illness.
Maintains State Call and Diversion Reports.
Maintains OPC Hearing dates.
Subjects to o call for after-hours Crisis Response Team calls and transports.
Assigned to the Fugitive Apprehension Search Team.
Assists with patrol duties and Civil and Warrant deputies as needed.
Maintains county vehicles and equipment and keeps maintenance records.
Enforces the constitution and laws of the United States and of the State of Texas.
Must possess the physical and/or mental abilities required to perform the essential functions of the job.
Shall abide by all Midland County Policies and City, County Ordinances, State and Federal Laws.
Perform any assignment issued by chain of command and/or Sheriff.
