About The Position

The Crewperson 4 – Building Finishes is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and enhancing the interior and exterior finishes of district facilities, with a primary emphasis on painting and surface finishing. This position performs a wide variety of painting, finishing, and building repair tasks including surface preparation, application of coatings, drywall and plaster repair, flooring finishes, ceiling repairs, door and hardware installation, and other general building maintenance activities. The employee is expected to demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, initiative, dependability, and the ability to perform quality work with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Valid Kansas Driver's License required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications, including asbestos training/licensing as applicable.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including respirators.
  • Must be willing to work second and/or third shift schedules as required.
  • Advanced knowledge of painting materials, coatings, finishes, and application methods.
  • Knowledge of building repair materials, construction practices, and finish systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member and maintain positive customer relations.
  • Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Outlook and Word.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, initiative, dependability, and confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of painting, finishing, building maintenance, construction, or related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare interior and exterior surfaces for painting through cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, priming, and masking.
  • Apply paints, stains, varnishes, sealers, epoxies, and other protective coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
  • Maintain and restore decorative and protective finishes on walls, ceilings, doors, windows, lockers, trim, masonry, metal surfaces, and other building components.
  • Perform interior painting of classrooms, offices, corridors, gyms, cafeterias, and other occupied spaces while ensuring areas are clean and operational upon completion.
  • Perform exterior painting of doors, window systems, siding, overhangs, fences, railings, gates, and other facility components.
  • Refinish gymnasium and stage floors, apply athletic game lines, and maintain painted surfaces in athletic and playground areas.
  • Layout and stripe parking lots, safety markings, traffic control markings, and other designated areas.
  • Remove, repair, and cover graffiti on district property.
  • Paint and maintain miscellaneous equipment and structures including flagpoles, safety rails, playground equipment, curbs, and safety zones.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of paint products, coatings, surface preparation methods, and application techniques.
  • Repair and finish drywall, plaster, and other wall systems to paint-ready condition.
  • Repair and replace ceiling systems including T-bar, lay-in, glue-up, and specialty ceilings.
  • Install and repair wood and metal stud framing systems.
  • Install and repair wood and metal doors, frames, and associated hardware.
  • Repair and replace ceramic tile, quarry tile, floor tile, and other finish materials.
  • Utilize leveling and layout equipment to ensure accurate installation of finish materials.
  • Assist with general building repair projects and facility improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Perform all work in a safe manner and report hazardous conditions immediately.
  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, and knowledge of materials, equipment, and industry best practices.
  • Maintain records and documentation necessary for efficient operation of the unit.
  • Assist in maintaining positive public relations while representing the Facilities Division and Wichita Public Schools.
  • Cooperate with other trades and departments to complete projects efficiently and professionally.
  • Support district goals, department objectives, and customer service expectations.
  • Participate in required training, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform mandatory snow removal and other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
