About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform manual work functions associated with installation and maintenance of traffic signs, street markers, and pavement markings. Duties include providing direction, guidance, and assistance to assigned staff; organizing projects; assigning and evaluating work; providing training as needed; and overseeing the work of inmate labor. The role involves performing manual work functions associated with the installation, maintenance, fabrication, and/or repair of traffic signs, street markers, and pavement markings, including digging trenches, operating paint machines, operating concrete saws, running cable, installing signs, raised pavement markers, and traffic signals, and replacing lamps. The Crew Leader will lead and participate in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and street markers within the City of Albany and Dougherty County, installing signs, checking/cleaning/replacing signs and posts, installing traffic control devices for detours, and setting up safety signs/cones. They may also flag traffic and install road striping and reflective markers. Additionally, the role may involve grounds keeping tasks, operating various vehicles and machinery, performing general and preventive maintenance on equipment, maintaining inventory, and communicating with various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Two (2) years of previous experience and/or training involving installation of traffic signs and road markings
  • Must possess and maintain valid Flagging Certification
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s)

Responsibilities

  • Provides direction, guidance and assistance to assigned staff; organizes projects; assigns and evaluates work; provides training as needed; oversees work of inmate labor.
  • Performs manual work functions associated with the installation, maintenance, fabrication, and/or repair of traffic signs, street markers, and pavement markings; digs trenches, operates paint machines, operates concrete saw, runs cable, installs signs, raised pavement markers, and traffic signals, replaces lamps, etc.
  • Leads and participates in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and street markers within the City of Albany and Dougherty County; installs signs, checks/cleans and/or replaces signs and posts as needed; installs traffic control devices for detours (street closings); sets up safety signs/cones; may flag traffic.
  • Installs roam striping on pavement; installs reflective markers on pavement including arrows, stop bars, school names, railroad crossings, etc.
  • May perform various grounds keeping tasks such as mowing, trimming shrubbery and tree limbs, collecting trash, raking leaves, removing trees and stumps, operating chipper/shredder, removing sawdust, and filling holes.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles, machinery and equipment in the performance of duties, such as dump trucks, jack hammers, backhoe, pipe saw, tamping machine, boring machine, tap machine, probing rod, chipper, thermoplastic applicator, spray system on truck-mounted striping machine, paint machines, bituminous applicator for installation of reflective markers, trencher, torches, eradicator, shovels, rakes, picks, and/or assorted hand tools.
  • Performs general and preventive maintenance as needed to keep vehicles and equipment in operable condition, such as inspecting equipment, pumping fuel, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, repairing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, etc.
  • Maintains inventory of parts, equipment, tools and supplies; receives incoming parts; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; loads/unloads assigned trucks and transports parts/supplies to work sites in order to complete work functions.
  • Receives, prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, maps, plats, drawings and other documents; forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service and/or information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, city departments, vendors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
