About The Position

The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated leader to help maintain the beauty and functionality of its world-renowned River Valley. As a Crew Leader, you will play a vital role in ensuring the parks remain safe, accessible, and welcoming for all visitors throughout the year. This position offers the opportunity to lead a hard-working team in one of the largest urban park systems in North America. As a Crew Leader, you will support the operations of River Valley Parks and Facilities through the direct supervision of labourer staff and the implementation of daily work plans. You will be responsible for directing teams in a variety of seasonal tasks, ranging from summer picnic site turnover and outdoor event support to winter ice surface creation and ski trail maintenance. Your role ensures that high standards of safety and quality are met through effective training, equipment procurement, and strict adherence to Occupational Health and Safety standards. Beyond technical tasks, you will foster excellent relationships with community partners and the public to provide top-tier customer service. Quality customer service is provided through maintaining effective working relationships with the public, City departments and outside organizations. Ultimately, your leadership ensures that the River Valley remains a welcoming space for all residents and visitors.

Requirements

  • Diploma in Parks, Recreation, Environment, Turf, Horticulture, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in park operations, maintenance, or River Valley parks
  • Ability to lead and develop effective work crews while fostering a positive team culture
  • Strong analytical skills to resolve complex operational issues and make independent decisions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with staff and the public
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and implement work plans effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Skill in operating equipment ranging from heavy-duty vehicles to small tools
  • Deep understanding of OH&S standards and environmental management programs like ENVISO

  • Ability to work a 40-hour work week with schedules that may include weekends and evenings
  • Participation in shift work or split shifts as required by seasonal operations
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Current First Aid and WHMIS certifications or the ability to obtain this certification
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Ability to wear a N95 mask

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Prior experience in customer service and conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of River Valley seasonal operations or similar municipal park experience
  • Q endorsement for Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement seasonal work plans, including the turnover of picnic sites and the production of outdoor ice surfaces and ski trails
  • Support major booking facilities such as Yorath House, Alfred Savage Centre, Rundle Family Centre, and the Northeast Park Event Centre. Support bookings on the operation preparation of each site, including custodial supports, event set ups, and customer service
  • Manage and support the operations of unique River Valley facilities such as the 100st Funicular, kihcihkaw askî, and William Hawrelak Park Amphitheatre
  • Directly supervise, mentor, and train Labourer I and II staff, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to succeed
  • Conduct regular field inspections to monitor park conditions, ice quality, ski trail conditions, and toboggan hill safety
  • Develop staff schedules, approve time-off requests, and assist in the seasonal recruitment of labourer staff
  • Support Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) programs and maintain environmental standards (ENVISO) through accurate documentation and reporting
  • Manage administrative tasks such as tracking supply inventory, managing service level documentation, daily work plan assignments, and completing incident reports for fleet or security issues
  • Review and respond to public inquiries and provide operational input for media or council inquiries as assigned
  • Collaborate with various City departments, including Fleet Services and Facility Maintenance, to ensure high-quality park conditions
