The Underground Crew Leader position is a skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role involves working safely on new construction, maintenance, or repair of energized and de-energized underground work, supervising crew members, and possessing a strong understanding of leadership and management skills. The Crew Leader is responsible for training lower-skilled employees in safe and productive work procedures, teaching underground services, infrastructure, and duct banks, and conducting pre-job or tailgate briefings. A working knowledge of all aspects of underground distribution, troubleshooting problems on underground circuits, and frequently working with energized high voltage systems are critical. The role also includes maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools, complying with reporting procedures, coordinating and inspecting crew work, and performing rigorous physical labor. Specific technical skills include identifying primary and secondary voltages, understanding induced voltage, knowing tools for cable termination, grounding procedures, obtaining a one-shot on a reclosure, working in confined spaces, properly installing and removing PPE, testing and classifying soil, operating equipment safely, phasing out a line, planning work based on job prints, understanding sloping and shoring, ladder requirements, obtaining line clearances, knowledge of line protection devices, inspecting rubber goods and PPE, and identifying puller and tensioner setups. The employee may perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
