About The Position

The purpose of this position is to lead and perform semi-skilled to skilled work to maintain facilities, grounds, and rights-of-way in the City. This role involves leading and overseeing the work of an assigned crew, planning work assignments, training crew members, and ensuring a safe work environment. The position requires adherence to safety procedures and involves a variety of maintenance duties including street, landscaping, and general facility upkeep. Specific duties may vary depending on the assigned department, such as Streets, Cemetery, Convention Center, or Solid Waste.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of related experience in facility, grounds, or street maintenance.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • May require possession of commercial driver’s license (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s) depending on assigned department.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and oversees the work of an assigned crew; plans work assignments; trains crew members in all essential functions; and maintains a safe work environment for work crew.
  • Ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Leads and performs a variety of street maintenance duties, including pouring concrete, patching holes, paving, repairing and installing curbs and sidewalks, painting street markings, repairing and cleaning storm drainage systems, installing street signs, and clearing debris.
  • Leads and performs a variety of landscaping duties, including mowing grass, planting flowers and shrubs, weed eating, edging, clearing debris from park areas, spreading ground cover, spraying weed killer and fertilizer, pruning trees and shrubs, spreading grass seed, and servicing irrigation systems.
  • Leads and performs a variety of other maintenance duties, including repairing sheds, tables, or playground equipment, emptying garbage, cleaning beaches, shoveling snow, cleaning and scrubbing floors, waxing floors, cleaning carpets, and cleaning windows, parking lot grounds, and offices.
  • Assists with special projects and seasonal work, such as installing and removing holiday decorations and banners, clearing debris after special events, and removing/replacing staging materials.
  • Operates a City vehicle, conducting pre- and post-trip inspections, loading and unloading materials, and reporting any problems or necessary repairs.
  • Consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, responds to complaints and questions related to maintenance issues, provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, work orders, or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Operates a variety of varied purpose equipment and tools in road, right-of-way, landscape, and utility maintenance.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of commercial-grade trucks and City vehicles.
  • Specific duties for assigned departments may include leading street sweeper operations, preparing preventive maintenance reports, overseeing grave openings/closings, marking graves, selling grave plots, leading event setups/teardowns, directing building maintenance, operating telescopic bleachers, setting up exhibit booths, barricades, basketball courts, ballrooms, meeting rooms, stages, and exhibit halls, responding to service calls after 4:00 p.m., retrieving trash, turning water on/off, replacing/repairing traffic signs, monitoring beach areas, emptying trash cans, shutting off beach showers, inspecting/repairing boardwalks, cleaning up after traffic accidents, and assisting with traffic control.
  • Participates in hurricane preparedness and clean up.
  • Performs other related duties as required, requested, and assigned.
