About The Position

This position is for a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) at a single men's shelter located in the Bronx. The CASAC will report to the Assistant Program Director or Team Leader and is responsible for conducting comprehensive client assessments, participating in the development and implementation of treatment plans for clients with substance abuse histories, and providing individual and group counseling focused on chemical abuse/dependency and promoting a drug-free lifestyle.

Requirements

CASAC with a Valid OASAS certification required. CASAC-T applicants will not be considered.
Bachelor’s degree (preferred) with a minimum of one (1) year of experience navigating the substance use and mental health systems in NYC.
Associate degree (considered) with a minimum of two (2) years’ navigating the substance use and mental health systems in NYC.
High School Diploma/ GED (considered) with a minimum of four (4) years’ experience navigating the substance use and mental health systems in NYC.
Experience facilitating groups for homeless adults.
Specialized knowledge of substance abuse issues and treatment.
Specialized knowledge of family dynamics treatment.
Experience in working with dual diagnosed population.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Demonstrated discretion in handling confidential information.
High level of computer proficiency in Word, Excel, and the ability to learn new technologies and databases.

Nice To Haves

Spanish language proficiency preferred; ability to communicate verbally and in writing with Spanish-speaking populations is a highly desirable plus.
Must have incredible initiative, the ability to work well under pressure, and the ability to be flexible and work both independently and as part of a team to complete complex projects in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

Completes comprehensive evaluations to screen for substance use history and identify client treatment needs.
Collaborates with the team to develop Individual Service Plans with clients.
Utilizes assessments to establish the degree of risk for substance use and associated harmful behaviors, and identifies interventions for recovery.
Provides individual and group counseling on substance use, relapse prevention, psychoeducation, and harm reduction using motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral techniques.
Advocates for clients in securing detox, rehabilitation care, and other community supports for integrated substance use or dual disorder treatment.
Serves as a liaison between OASAS treatment programs and the CRF Transitional Housing Program.
Refers clients to services with partner providers.
Conducts outreach and develops referral and service resources within the local community.
Documents all client contacts, assessments, and activities in case notes and client charts, and enters data into CARES or other reporting systems.
Completes required reports.
Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings, staff meetings, and staff training.
Participates in the coordination of client ceremonies, events, and other program activities.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee, adapting to changing priorities and new responsibilities.
