About The Position

We are seeking a Crane Operator to be entrusted with the operation of specialized cranes to safely lift, position, and install electrical transformers and heavy equipment in complex environments including substations, power plants, and large-scale construction sites. The ideal candidate requires exceptional situational awareness, close collaboration with field crews, and a steadfast commitment to meeting or exceeding all state and federal safety standards.

Requirements

  • Valid NCCCO Crane Operator Certification (or equivalent nationally accredited certification) and Class A CDL
  • Minimum 1-3 years of crane operating experience, preferably in transformer or substation work
  • Demonstrated experience with critical lifts and heavy electrical equipment
  • Ability to read and understand load charts and lift plans
  • Knowledge of hand signals and radio communication protocols
  • Strong safety record and commitment to safe work practices
  • Strong communication skills, with a strong customer focus
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and online platforms
  • Willingness to travel up to 75% across the continental U.S.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must pass a DOT physical, background check, and drug/alcohol screening
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Available for extended and irregular hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Physically capable of lifting 50+ lbs., working outdoors in all weather, at heights (100+ ft), in confined spaces, and around high-voltage equipment
  • Requires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on utility, substation, or power generation projects
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Rigging certification or documented rigging experience
  • Understanding of transformer maintenance or oil testing procedures
  • Knowledge of oil processing and degassing best practices
  • Technical training or certification in transformer repair or electrical systems
  • Experience with transformer testing software or OEM systems

Responsibilities

  • Operate cranes to load, unload, hoist, and place power transformers, including large and critical lifts
  • Conduct daily pre-operation inspections of cranes, rigging, slings, hooks, and lifting devices
  • Read and interpret lift plans, load charts, blueprints, and rigging diagrams
  • Work closely with riggers, signal persons, linemen, and supervisors to ensure safe lifts
  • Ensure cranes are properly stabilized, leveled, and set up on appropriate ground conditions
  • Maintain load control at all times, avoiding contact with energized lines or structures
  • Comply with OSHA, NCCCO, ANSI, DOT, and utility safety standards
  • Complete required documentation, including inspection logs, lift checklists, and job reports
  • Support mobilization and demobilization of cranes between job sites
  • Assist with transformer assembly, oil processing, re-gasketing, and general repairs
