The Centre for Research and Applications in Fluidic Technologies (CRAFT) is a collaborative research center between the University of Toronto (UofT), the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), and Unity Health Toronto (UHT). CRAFT is establishing an internationally leading and nationally unique research enterprise, focused on device innovation related to (a) diagnostics for remote communities and critical care, (b) organ-on-a-chip technologies, and (c) biofabrication. A particular emphasis is on growing the engagement with industry and clinical partners as well as integrating new research equipment at our new site, the Diagnostic Horizon’s Lab at UT. The CRAFT Technician will work in a professional and multidisciplinary environment, alongside UofT and NRC staff members and as part of a technical team that operates the CRAFT facilities including the Tissue Foundry (BSL 2 spaces), the Device Foundry (class 1,000 and 10,000 cleanrooms for microfluidic device manufacturing), and the new Diagnostic Horizons Laboratory (wearable and implantable microfluidic sensors). The CRAFT facilities support 80+ researchers and a handful of startup companies that use the infrastructure to manufacture and test microfluidic devices for a variety of applications including biomanufacturing, chemical synthesis, energy, and much more. The CRAFT Technician will work directly with the CRAFT Operations Supervisor to plan and execute the new DHL facility, specifically implementing the new equipment that will arrive including PCB manufacturing, mechanical testing, 3D printing, device packaging, sterilization, 3D textile printing, and more. The CRAFT Technician will also partake in other day to day operational requirements of the facility as well as some fee-for-service work where needed. Prior knowledge of wearable and implantable sensors, or microfluidic device manufacturing is an asset however it’s expected that the CRAFT Technician will learn a variety of new scientific instrumentation and build on any prior experience.
