About The Position

The New Jersey Judiciary is seeking a Court Interpreter with experience in the legal environment and technical competency in court interpreting. The successful candidate will demonstrate high integrity, honesty, commitment to customer service, and dedication to professional development. This role involves interpreting in court proceedings, quasi-judicial hearings, dispute resolution events, and other court-related events using sight, consecutive, and simultaneous modes, either in person or via telecommunication. The position also includes translating official documents such as forms, notices, posters, and correspondence. Responsibilities also encompass data collection and entry into record-keeping systems, and continuous professional development to maintain and enhance interpreting and translating skills. The candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills and collaborate effectively with all levels of Judiciary staff. Positions will be filled at one of three levels (Trainee, Journey, or Mastery) based on candidate qualifications and available openings.

Requirements

  • Eligible applicants are court interpreters approved by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC).
  • AOC approved interpreters include interpreters who have passed the written and performance oral exams of the National Center for State Courts administered by the AOC or an equivalent test administered by a member state of the National Center for State Courts; or who possess the Federal Court Interpreter Certification by having passed the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Exam administered by the Administrative Office of the United States Courts.
  • Prior to translating documents, incumbents must pass the translation test administered by the AOC.
  • US citizenship is not required.
  • Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
  • Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting.
  • In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret in three modes of interpretation (sight, consecutive, and simultaneous) in court proceedings, quasi-judicial hearings, complimentary dispute resolution events, and other court related events in person or via a telecommunication device.
  • Produce translations of documents (either in draft or final form), such as official forms, public signs, notices, posters, form letters, and correspondence.
  • Collect and enter data into automated record-keeping systems.
  • Participate in study and training activities in a group or individually in order to develop and maintain interpreting and translating skills.
  • Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.
