About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at McGill University is inviting applications for a course lecturer position to teach PHIL 202-001, The Good Life, in Fall 2026. This 3-credit course examines how ancient philosophers like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Stoics, Epicureans, and Skeptics grappled with the question of how we should live, focusing on their philosophies as gateways to happiness, virtue, and peace of mind. It also covers select modern views from Kierkegaard to Sartre, analyzing their differences from ancient perspectives. The course delves into fundamental questions such as what truly matters, whether it pays to be good, the nature of the best society, and the ability to escape emotional turmoil. It explores how answers to these questions are linked to assumptions about God, nature, knowledge, the soul, and politics. The course is scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 04:35 pm to 05:25 pm, running from August 31, 2026, to December 4, 2026, and will be held in MCMED 504. Requirements

• Completed a PhD degree or be enrolled in a doctoral program in Philosophy.
• Provide evidence of highly effective teaching ability, demonstrated by successfully teaching or working as a teaching assistant in a similar course.
• Have research specialization or competence in some of the major problems of philosophy, evidenced by refereed publications and/or conference presentations, thesis-level research, prior successful teaching experience in this or a closely related course, or minimally, at least two graduate-level courses on topics in the field.
• Be authorized to work in Canada.
• Be willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based.
• Possess English communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
