About The Position

This course concerns how criminal law is practiced in Canadian criminal courts. Topics to be addressed include the structure, organization and hierarchy of the Canadian criminal courts as well as the rights and duties of, and interaction between, such criminal law practitioners as Crown counsel, defence attorneys and judges. Other topics may include: the adversary system; fair trial rights; disclosure; trial by jury; criminal lawyers' ethics; courtroom environment, protocol and procedure; the role of criminal law practitioners during plea-bargaining, bail hearings, trial, sentencing and the appeal.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree
  • MA in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or a cognate discipline (e.g. sociology) that is clearly and directly connected to the course content, and with a focus on crime or deviance.
  • CV (Maximum of 10 pages, with 12-point font and 2.54 cm margins).

Nice To Haves

  • Work experience in the field is an asset.
  • Prior teaching experience is an asset.
  • PhD or ABD preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach CC207 BR – Criminal Courts and Trials course.
  • Deliver lectures on topics including the structure, organization, and hierarchy of Canadian criminal courts.
  • Discuss the rights, duties, and interactions of criminal law practitioners such as Crown counsel, defense attorneys, and judges.
  • Cover topics such as the adversary system, fair trial rights, disclosure, trial by jury, criminal lawyers' ethics, courtroom environment, protocol, and procedure.
  • Explain the role of criminal law practitioners in plea-bargaining, bail hearings, trial, sentencing, and appeals.
