About The Position

GEICO is hiring Counsel for its Staff Counsel office in Austin, Texas. The position defends lawsuits filed in Texas courts and handles other first-party insurance defense matters. It is remote, but the candidate must live within commuting distance of the Austin site. The role requires travel as needed to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.

Requirements

7–9+ years of related litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury.
Juris Doctor degree.
Admission to the Texas Bar and a license in good standing to practice law in Texas; meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory CLE requirements where applicable.
Ability to travel as required, including to trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
Ability to document files clearly, concisely, and professionally for customers, clients, coworkers, and other employees.
Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve or facilitate resolution of conflicts, and demonstrate strong organization, priority-setting, and multitasking skills.
Ability to learn and apply substantial technical and procedural information.

Nice To Haves

Civil litigation experience.
Insurance defense-related litigation experience.
Ability to communicate professionally in person, by telephone, and through written correspondence or email.

Responsibilities

Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department.
Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions or examinations before trial and examinations under oath.
Defend assigned matters at trial or dispositive hearings, as applicable.
