About The Position

GEICO is looking to hire a Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in California courts and other first party insurance defense. The position is with GEICO Staff Counsel located in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco. This role involves researching laws, preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda, and rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department. The Counsel will also be responsible for preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations before trial, examinations under oath, and defending assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearing.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in litigation experience on insurance/defense/and or personal injury
• Juris Doctor degree
• Admission to the California Bar
• Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in California and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
• Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited to, attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences
• Must be able to document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner, to be understood by customers, clients, co-workers and other employees of the organization
• Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
• Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information

Nice To Haves

• Civil litigation experience
• Insurance defense-related litigation experience
• Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone and written correspondence/email
